Markus Aujalay
Creative power, experience, and love for food.
Markus Aujalay is one of Sweden’s most well-known and appreciated chefs – a personality who, with his calm demeanor, professionalism, and passion, has inspired both guests and chefs for over two decades.
His career has taken him from some of Sweden’s most prestigious restaurants to international kitchens around the world, and on to a public breakthrough as a TV chef and jury member in MasterChef Sweden.
Markus began his journey at classic establishments such as Operakällaren, Leijontornet, and Fredsgatan 12 – restaurants where craftsmanship, technique, and respect for ingredients shaped his view of cooking. Over the years, he has developed a style that combines elegance and accessibility, the classic and the modern, with inspiration from the Mediterranean and international cuisine.
Markus has also competed in culinary competitions and won Chef of the Year 2004, Green Chef of the Year 2000, Game Chef of the Year 2000 and represented Sweden in Bocuse d’Or 2007.
For Markus, food is about passion and joy, community, and of course, flavors and pleasure. He aims to create experiences that feel genuine – where carefully prepared dishes meet a relaxed atmosphere and personal service. It’s not about impressing, but about touching.
At Tegelbacken, everything comes together: the culinary experience, the artistic play, and human warmth.
Here, Markus Aujalay expresses what he believes in most – that fine dining can be both elegant and heartfelt, both luxurious and playful.
Tegelbacken
Fine dining with glamour and a twinkle in the eye
Upon entering the restaurant, you’re immediately greeted by the joyful, colorful décor, warm lighting, and a sense of glamour with a playful touch. Together, these elements create a cozy, inviting, and relaxed atmosphere.
Through the large windows covering the entire wall, the fantastic view over the water in the heart of Stockholm unfolds. Here, you’re treated to an experience with warm, welcoming service that feels personal, elegant, and luxuriously glamorous.
The menu at Tegelbacken constantly evolves with the seasons and inspiration. It has its roots in classic international cuisine, with clear Mediterranean influences. The focus is on clean flavors, carefully selected ingredients, and thoughtful craftsmanship.
The service is warm and welcoming – always with the goal of making guests feel well taken care of. Tegelbacken is about creating a complete experience where everything connects: the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, and the feeling that every visit should be a memorable experience.

Winterviken
Tegelbacken’s sister restaurant
In beautiful Vinterviken, Gröndal, just minutes from Stockholm city with a stunning view over Lake Mälaren’s shore, lies Alfred Nobel’s old dynamite factory from 1891. Here you’ll find a café serving lunch and “fika” that’s open daily all year round, a unique banquet hall for corporate parties, weddings, conferences and other events, and a stage for concerts with space for up to 500 guests in the magnificent Grand Hall.
Winterviken shares Tegelbacken’s philosophy – genuine joy for food, carefully selected ingredients, warm and caring service, and attention to details – those little extras that make every visit memorable.
A warm welcome to a factory for everyone!
